Good Sports: Playing for Social Change

February 27, 2013

Keynote Speaker: Brendan Tuohey

Good sports are athletes who play fair on the field and within the game. But what about beyond the field and outside the game? Might this label also describe athletes who work to improve fair play in the larger society? Brendan Tuohey, co-founder of Peace Players International, certainly believes so.

Co-founder of Peace Players International visited Otterbein to tell how he and his brother Sean have used the sport of Basketball to overcome deeply entrenched  barriers between groups in Northern Ireland, South Africa, Israel and West Bank, Cyprus, and New Orleans.

Since the year 2000, PPI clinics in Northern Ireland, South Africa,  Israel and the West Bank, Cyprus and New Orleans have shown over 60,000 children how to “play together (so they can) live together”.

Columbus Crew Comes to Campus!

We started our IS Symposium off right! We welcomed Robin Ungerleider, Community Relations Manager who shared Crew's social responsibility to our community and their involvement in MLS WORKS.

Student's had an opportunity to hear real life stories of our own Columbus Crew's involvement and their efforts to improve fair play off the field and into our communities. As a bonus, students got to ask questions and receive information on what it takes to get into Sports Management.

 Film showing: Invictus

Ending the Symposium, students came to watch the showing of Invictus, a film about an inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela joined the captain of South Africa's rugby team in efforts to unite their beloved country. Through the universal language of sport, Mandela and rugby coach join efforts to help bridge the racially and economically divided country and lead the team to an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.
